Scenario-based planning support system for reducing combined sewer overflows (CSOs)

Professor Xinhao Wang and Dr. Xin Fu, a recent graduate from the Regional Development Planning doctoral program and a post-doctor fellow at the US EPA Office of Research and Development, National Risk Management Research Laboratory presented their study at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning annual conference in Buffalo, NY on October 27, 2018. They developed a scenario-based planning support system to integrate green infrastructure (GI) and grey infrastructure in reducing combined sewer overflow (CSO) occurrences. Users of the planning support system can adjust the input parameters with sliding bars and drop-down list to explore the effectiveness of CSO reduction under various scenarios. The study aims to explore the applicability of parcel-level GI application in stormwater management and citizen participation in decision-making process. It represents Dr. Wang’s research interests in environmental planning, applications of geographic information system (GIS), visualization, and modeling in planning and decision-making to promote resilience and sustainability.
