The School of Art at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) is proud to host Studio Shift, the 2016 Mid-America College Art Association Conference (MACAA) from October 26-28, 2016. The conference will examine evolving fine art and design practices and their contexts, as well as scholarship about them.
MACAA is an organization founded in the 1930’s that incorporates a wide variety of issues related to studio arts, design, art history, and aesthetics. MACAA also includes an exhibition each conference year and now attracts a national audience from Texas to New York to Canada. MACAA is an affiliate of the College Art Association.
2016 MACAA 2016 will feature three keynote speakers who will address issues pertinent to art in the mid-west and beyond. They are: Hal Foster (Sculpture, Tradition, Space and Time, Annual Vista Foundation Lecture, October 26, in DAAP 4400 from 5:00-6:00pm), Jon Rubin (Doing Stuff with People, sponsored by FotoFocus & UC Distinguished Speaker Fund, October 27 in DAAP 4400 from 4:00-5:00), and Hamza Walker (The Making of a Midwesterner, or How I Backed my Way into the Visual Arts, October 28 at the Contemporary Arts Center, 44 East 6th Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202, in downtown Cincinnati from 5:00-6:00 pm). Speakers have been invited based on their unique insights into art and their presentations link to MACAA’s mission of creating spaces for discussion of contemporary issues in art making and teaching.
The MACAA conference sessions will be held in the internationally recognized Peter Eisenman-designed DAAP building on the UC campus, which has been voted one of the most beautiful college campuses in the world. The MACAA conference will feature over 41 panel presentations - including student presentations, art demonstrations, and an exhibition, Straight to Video, curated by Jon Rubin at the Reed Gallery located in the DAAP building. These presentations address a wide range of topics from art history to design thinking, and from 3d printing to drawing. For a full listing of presentations and abstracts please visit the MACAA website listed below.
FotoFocus is a partner for Studio Shift. The FotoFocus Biennial 2016 is a regional, month-long celebration of photography and lens-based art held throughout Cincinnati and the surrounding region. In addition to the conference sessions, the keynote speakers, the DAAP Reed Gallery exhibition, and FotoFocus Biennial 2016 activities, there is also a juried exhibition Better Than Art highlighting art by MACAA 2016 conference attendees at MODERN MAKERS, Cincinnati’s multidisciplinary event-based art collaborative, located at 3025 Concordia St. Cincinnati, OH 45206. The exhibition dates are: Oct 27-Nov 30, 2016 and open to all MACAA conference attendees. The opening reception is October 27, 7:00-10:00 pm.
We hope to find you at one of the sessions, the keynotes events, or enjoying the FotoFocus activities and our own MACAA art exhibition in October 2016.
