The University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) is well-known for producing top talent in the field of fashion design with DAAP alums' creations striding the runway at some of the most prestigious international shows.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW), taking place from September 4-11, 2014, in New York City is one of those top international shows. This year’s MBFW will feature the work of designers from 12 different countries including industry stalwarts such as Badgley Mischka, DKNY and Vera Wang. Fifteen up-and-coming designers will also make their MBFW debuts.
Colin King, DAAP 2013 Fashion Design graduate, will be included in that group of 15 up-and-comers exhibiting their work for the first time at MBFW. Colin King’s line titled, “CROWN,” creates tailored sport and daywear for social and professional women using the highest-grade materials sourced worldwide. Each piece in his line represents his unique vision. Colin makes each pattern and sample in-house himself with production taking place in his Brooklyn factory.
As a student in UC’s top-ranked fashion design program, Colin excelled in the classroom and studio and worked at co-op positions from coast to coast and overseas. Some of his designs were marketed at the upscale New York outlet, Barneys, in Asia (Japan) and Europe (France) and were used in a photo shoot with basketball player Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal so his talent was recognized well before graduation.
Upon graduation, King proclaimed, “After graduating, I will move to New York. I’ll pursue freelance work like I’ve done there previously. There’s plenty of freelance work, and I’ve already done it to pay rent, food and expenses. So, I know it can be done. And I’ll also pursue work on my own line.” With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see his promised clothing line already showcased along side of other top designers as part of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
