Spring 2009
A study quarter in Arizona, S. Colorado & New Mexico
A studio and other courses toward U.C. graduation. Study a powerful natural environment and a crucible of cultural histories and architectures; including Native American, Northern European, and Hispanic.
The program is intended as an opportunity for students in Architecture and Interior Design to study design in complex multi-cultural settings without leaving the United States. Study is focused on the roles of environment and design in the identity of region. It raises questions of what aspects of region should be enriched and what aspects are destructive. The Southwest is an ideal laboratory for these studies. There are striking contrasts in the environmental and design values of different aboriginal peoples, peoples of Hispanic descent and other groups of Anglo and European origins, both in the past and the present.
