Southwest Courses

Courses

  • Southwestern Studio (23ARCH491). The studio focuses upon a) region as a concept, b) intersecting cultural histories, c) contemporary issues and situations, and d) the concepts of "place" and "place-making". It requires each student also to keep a narrative and visual record of engagement with the project.
  • Histories of Architectures and Settlements of the SW lecture and discussion course (23ARCH497). The course involves historians, archaeologists and other scholars on the history of Native American, Hispanic, and other immigrant groups and their making of spaces in the region. We also examine their cultural interactions and their contributions to the character of the region.
  • Theory Seminar (23ARCH494) on frameworks for understanding how architecture and space may be involved with social and environmental contexts and processes, especially in the Southwest. We consider how far, and in what ways, these involvements are general processes and which are unique to cultural or regional situations.
  • Independent Study (23ARCH490 or 23ARCH590) on an issue or segment of the architectures or spaces of the Southwest. This could focus upon a subregional area, a time period, a cultural, social, technological, economic, or environmental change. It might also focus upon the work of a particular group or designer. This study requires an independent study preparation and proposal submitted prior to spring in the SW for which a student can receive credit (23ARCH390).

Students may also choose to add Independent Study Travel, involving at least three weeks of additional travel associated with the region and to add (23ARCH390) if this suits their interest or assists their program of studies. Both these additional study activities must be approved by the instructor.
