Kristin Cullen is a freelance graphic designer and Associate Professor of Design at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Kristin has also taught courses at both institutions.
Her design studio specializes in posters, miscellaneous printed matter, including invitations and mailers, and publications (books, journals) for commercial and nonprofit clients. Her work has appeared in national and international exhibitions, as well as publications such as 1,000 Designer Greetings, American Corporate Identity, The Big Book of Layouts, Design for Special Events, Graphis Poster Annuals, Graphic Design USA Awards Annual, and Print Magazine. She also authored and designed the book, Layout Workbook: A Real-World Guide to Building Pages in Graphic Design, which was published by Rockport Publishers.
Her professional history includes positions at the Chicago firms, Strandell Design and Mark Oldach Design. Kristin recently served as the art director for the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati - a role concurrent to her full time teaching activities, which are dedicated to subjects that include basic through advanced typography, motion design, and senior thesis.
Kristin's area of expertise, as well as research interests, include all things typographic-from the traditional to the avant-garde. She has a penchant for book and publication design, as well as large scale posters. She is also researching and developing a second book concept that is dedicated to typographic details, such as hanging punctuation, the use of dashes, and spacing nuances.
