DESCRIPTION

This learning experience in human interest design was born out of the collaboration between MetroLAB and the Cincinnati not-for-profit urban arts organization Elementz - a local Urban Arts Center that serves as a catalyst for change for Cincinnati’s inner-city youth. Elementz was founded and is supported by community stakeholders from a diverse spectrum of ethnicities, backgrounds and interests who believe in our youth and the power of music, poetry, and art to change lives.

In this studio, Stephen and his students worked directly with the inner-city youth to imagine how to personalize expression within the Elementz spaces. Final products included a new reception desk, storage bins, window controls, a portable DJ table and acoustic ceiling cloud treatments.

ELEMENTZ STUDIO 2

The studio, located at the Urban Arts Center, is a local not-for-profit arts organization whose core mission is to serve as a catalyst for change for Cincinnati’s inner-city youth. Founded and supported by a diverse array of community leaders and stakeholders who believe in the power of music, poetry and art to change lives, Elementz teaches, champions and represents Hip-Hop culture in Cincinnati.

The exploration of the tenets of Hip-Hop through the design-build and rapid prototyping process is core to the collaboration between MetroLAB and Elementz. The aim is to have the art form of Hip-Hop play a central role in the pedagogy of the studio as well as serve as ambassador with the objective to foster relationships that will allow each student group to learn and appreciate the training and talents of the other, and in doing so, form a bond that could forge community, inspire empathy, and sponsor lasting change.
