Dennis Alan Mann was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 8, 1940. He is married to Garda Sommer Mann (DAAP 1965) who has an Interior Design. They have a married daughter, Akira, living in Portland, OR (with their two granddaughters, Cassin Gabriela Wright and Hutton Jane Audrey Wright) and a married son, Nicholas (DAAP 1994), living in Cincinnati (with their grandsons, Noah Aleksonder Mann and Zander Isiah Mann). Professor Mann went to public school, received his undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of Cincinnati and his Masters degree from the University of Pennsylvania where he studied under Louis I. Kahn. He is a licensed architect in Ohio and New Mexico. He spent his tenth summer in a row in Taos, New Mexico building the first phase of the Mann family compound, an off-the-grid, sustainable 1200sf straw bale house on the mesa (El. 7400'). The focus of his academic work has been in the relationship between architecture and popular culture and most recently in on-going research tracking African American architects.
