Industrial Design: Computer Requirements 2009-2010
Incoming Industrial Design students are required to purchase a laptop computer for their first year computer course. The college has arranged special academic pricing for these computers that meet the specifications for the demanding applications taught in the program.
The primary system required by the Industrial Design program is the HP Ultra Performance Workstation 8730W. This system has been specified because it contains the necessary video card to run the high end AutoDesk StudioTools and Solidworks software used by the Industrial Design program.
How to buy the HP Systems
Purchasing is accomplished through the CampusHP online Store. The only system that meets these requirements is DAAP Recommended #3. Purchase of any other system is not supported. You can purchase your software and recommended accessories through the UC Bookstore. See more information below.
When to Buy
We recommend that all students purchase their systems, software and accessories during summer orientation. After you have received your student ID during orientation you can head over to the bookstore, choose the bundle that meets your needs and pay for it all at once. Please note that the bookstore does not carry HP systems, you will need to purchase the computer at the CampusHP online Store.
Alternative Option
We also carry specialized systems from Apple. Although theses system will run the software, they are not officially supported by AutoDesk. Autodesk Tech Support will be unable to assist you in installing software if there is a problem. That being said, many individuals have run the software successfully. If the student is willing to overcome and tend to the technological hurdles running Windows software on a MacBook pro, then the Apple laptop can be a viable option.
Purchasing for Apple sysetems is accomplished through the UC Bookstore. The store offers special pricing and bundles of all the required hardware, software, and provides a one-stop shop for all the accessories you might need.
You can choose one of the 3 models that meet our specifications by viewing the DAAP Recommended Systems Page. Keep in mind that although you can purchase hardware through their online store, you cannot purchase software online. See "When to Buy" below for more information.
- Note The system labeled DAAP 1 does not meet the necessary requirements for industrial design students.
