Undergraduate Drawing

Drawings defy categorization. They can be startling in their immediacy or sumptuously rich in their refinement. They can be intimate or beyond human scale; they can be preparatory to a finished work or artworks in their own right. Drawing is a fundamental way of discovering the world and serves as a profound means to analyze and think critically. We believe drawing is basic training for artistic activity in every medium.

Completion of Basic Drawing for Fine Arts students is prerequisite to a one-quarter requirement in Life Drawing, an introductory course in human anatomy and figurative composition. Students who elect drawing as a major within the 2D concentration are furnished on-campus studios. Each drawing major is challenged to discover a personal direction in the company of peers exploring diverse approaches from traditional applications, to graphic novels, digital productions, and redefinitions of the medium that reflect drawing practices in the contemporary art world.
