DAAPNews: January 2011
Message from Dean Robert Probst
Greetings! Ihope 2011 is turning out to be a great year for our alumni family. We're grateful for your involvement and appreciate your continued interest in the College and our activities.
It seems time goes by faster and faster each year, which is why I wanted to tell you about some fantastic events the college will be hosting over the coming weeks and months. These events are a great way to catch up with all of our friends, alumni, and partners, and the full list is available below.
Alumni in Greater Cincinnati should plan to attend the Deskey Exhibit Symposium, which takes place Thursday, Feb. 3 from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. in room 5401.
Donald Deskey, a preeminent modernist designer of the 1930s and 1940s, was recently named one of the top 20 design influences of the 20th century by Worthpoint.com and Architectural Digest. This acknowledgment has inspired UC's Reed Gallery, in conjunction with Deskey, the namesake company still doing business today, to bring Donald Deskeyís work to the public through an exhibit titled ìCreative Conscious: The Unconstrained Mind of Donald Deskey.î
The symposium will feature Craig Vogel, Matt Carcieri (Procter & Gamble), and Gail Davidson (National Design Museum).
Here is an overview of events planned a bit later in the year:
∑ UC DAAP Reunion. With Special recognition for the 1961 Class*. May 13 - 15.
∑ DAAP Works 2011. June 7 thru June 11, which highlights the creative output of the graduating class of 2011.
∑ DAAP 60th Annual Fashion Show. Honoring faculty that have devoted their careers to the fashion program at UC - Friday, June 10. Followed by the VIA After Party, which is hosted by the DAAP Alumni Association.
Call the DAAP Office of Development & Alumni Affairs at 556-1143 or emaildaap-dev-alum@ucmail.uc.edu to see how you can support these fun activities. We hope you can join us!
*Volunteers are neededto assist with planning the 1961 class party. If you are interested, please contact the DAAP Office of Development & Alumni Affairs (contact info above).

1819 Gifts Raise Alumni Giving Rate and UCís Ranking
DAAP students and alumni understand the connection between high national rankings and the value of their degrees. A new initiativecalled 1819 is generating alumni support that will raise the universityís overall ranking and provide an extra boost for all UC and DAAP degrees.
The percentage of alumni who donate to a university each year (in any amount) is a factor in U.S. News & World Reportís national college rankings. UC has much room for improvement: Our 11% giving rate is 13th among the 16 Big East schools. And DAAPís alumni giving rate is below UCís.
Only our alumni can help improve our standing, and 1819 is a great way to do it. 1819 (honoring UCís founding year) seeks a gift of just $18.19, an amount within every alumís reach. If you havenít given to UC in the last year (or ever), your 1819 gift will move the needle on UCís alumni giving rate and our national ranking. That means your degree will become even stronger.Click here to learn more and make your gift of at least $18.19.
