Spring is events season at DAAP -- come celebrate with us!

 

Hello!

Spring is in full swing at DAAP, which means there are a host of exciting events on the horizon for our alumni, friends, and core supporters. I hope you'll make plans to join us and reconnect with the college and each other at one (or more!) of the events listed below.

Please keep in mind that ALL alumni are welcome atReunion Weekend, which runs May 13-15. If you haven't been back to campus lately,refer to this map for details on parking and other activities.

In addition, I'm pleased to announce a special opportunity for high school students to experience the exciting and creative world of architecture and design at UC through DAAP Summer Camps. For more information and to register,please click here.

Finally, don't forget to check out our newly redesigned website. The main UC web site has also been redesigned with enhanced video capabilities --like this video that was created for the DAAP Cares Exhibit and presentation, showcasing DAAP's extensive reach in the community.

DAAP Back to College Day - Friday, May 13

10:00 a.m. -- 11:00 a.m. -- Meet in room 5430 to mingle with your classmates over coffee and donuts!

11:00 a.m. -- Walking tour of the College -- see what's changed since you last visited!

11:30 p.m. -- 1:30 p.m. -- Lunch and program, room 5430 (the program will feature student presentations, a special welcome from Robert Probst, and of course, class photos!)

In addition, both the DAAP library and gallery will be open from 10-5 on Friday, May 13.

The Visual Language of Herbert Matter

 

May 3 at 7:30 p.m. -- Join us for the Cincinnati premiereof a new documentary about legendary Swiss designer Herbert Matter, directed by Reto Caduff. The screening will be held in Room 4400, and Caduff will be on hand to introduce his work.

 


DAAPWORKS

 

June 7 through June 11 --a week of activities highlighting the output of the graduating class of 2011.

 

Friday, June 10: 60th Annual DAAP Fashion Show -- Honoring faculty that have devoted their careers to the fashion program at UC. The fashion show will be followed by the After Party, which is hosted by the DAAP Alumni Association.

 

Tickets to the general public will go on sale April 25.

 


Philanthropy News & Funding Opportunities

 

David NilandIn celebration of what would have been Professor Niland's 81st birthday in April, we have established the David Niland Endowment Fund with a generous gift from an anonymous donor.

 

David Niland was a distinguished and passionate teacher and practitioner. He was an inspiring educator with an understanding of aesthetic principles, highly developed formal composition skills, a great love of architecture, a commitment to and love of teaching, and an extensive knowledge of architectural history and theory. Your support will ensure that Professor Niland's legacy of design excellence will remain in the school forever.

1819 Gifts Raise Alumni Giving Rate and UC's Ranking

DAAP students and alumni understand the connection between high national rankings and the value of their degrees. UC Student Designs New JCPenney Logo

Design student Luke Langhuscreated the brand new JCPenney logo, which officially debuted during the Feb. 27 Academy Awards broadcast.

 

Student's Chair Project Featured on Design Super Sites

A chair design he completed as a student has earned recent graduate Cody Stonerock coverage by design super sites like Core77.com.Check out his creation.

 

DAAP Student Wins Second Place in National Packaging Competition

Rachel Eckberg recently won second place in a national packaging competition. Perhaps even better, she received thegood news about her win while studying abroad in France.

 

Scholarship Recipient to Use Travel Funds for Research in New York City

DAAP's Jessica Workmanrecently won the art history program's George Stricevic Book/Travel Fund. She'll use the award to travel to New York City for research and study this summer.

 

Portuguese Fulbright Student Studies Fine Arts at UC

When he won a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to study anywhere in the world, Andre Alveschose to pursue his master's in fine arts at UC.

 

DAAP Student Wins Opportunity to Exhibit Design in Prestigious Chicago Show

Industrial design junior Chet Larrowjust won second place in an international design competition, earning him the opportunity to exhibit his work to design professionals around the world.

U.S. News 2012 Graduate Rankings Include Three DAAP Programs

The2012 rankings of graduate programs by U.S. News & World Report include DAAP's industrial design, graphic design and fine arts offerings.

 

New York Video Artist Tommy Hartung to Exhibit at DAAP Galleries

New York-based video artist Tommy Hartungwill display his work in an exhibit, "TOMMY HARTUNG," at the University of Cincinnati's Philip M. Meyers Jr. Memorial Gallery April 4-29, 2011.

UC Graphic Novelist Finalist for L.A. Times Book Prize

Graphic novelistCarol Tyler is a finalist for an L.A. Times Book Prize. Her work has previously been nominated for three Eisner Awards, the American comics industry's highest award, as well as other prestigious honors.

 

New Planning Faculty Member Researches Fiscal Health of Governments

As a new faculty member to the School of Planning, Beth Walter Honadle's research interests target current concerns.She conducts research related to state and local fiscal health and more.

 

Art Education Faculty Named to National Leadership Post

DAAP's Flavia Bastoswas just elected to serve on the Board of the National Art Education Association, where she will serve as the higher education coordinator-elect.

Planning Alum Helps with Master Plan Project in South Korea

After graduating from DAAP in 2009, planning student Randy Simes was offered a full-time job by his co-op employer. Now that workhas led to a project where he serves as a military master planner in South Korea, helping to relocate thousands of military personnel from a base in the heart of Seoul.

 

A Valentine's Day Tribute to DAAP Romances

It's safe to say that DAAP students are passionate about design. The work ethic and dedication to excellence creates a unique culture, one which many one-time DAAP students continue to share throughout their lives as married couples.  Meet four such couples.
