The Art History graduate program focuses on modern and contemporary art and visual culture. Our four full-time graduate faculty members bring expertise in international contemporary art, photography, 19th-20th c. American art, modern Japanese, African American art, aesthetics, art criticism, film and media studies.

Professional Practice

Professional practice is a cornerstone of both the ArtHistory MA program and in related graduate programs, including the Museum Studies certificate. Students have the option of earning a Museum Studies Certificate and drawing upon the rich museum culture in Cincinnati. Students also have the option of earning a certificate in Historic Preservation with additional coursework.The program sponsors the Art History guest lecture series, in tandem with the School of Art Visiting Artists and Scholars series, which features well-known art historians and museum professionals with local, regional, and national reputations. Recent speakers in the School of Art Series have been Pamela Thomas (2008), Julia Andrews (2007), Kymberly Pinder (2007), Toby Kamps (2006), Linda Shearer (2006), Wouter Davidts (2006) and Stephanie Dickey (2006).

Assistantships

We offer teaching assistantships and graduate assistantships in the DAAP Library and the DAAP Galleries. These are merit-based and are renewable for one year.

Art History and Curatorial Practice Lecture Series

The program sponsors the Art History guest lecture series, in tandem with the School of Art Visiting Artists and Scholars series, which features well-known art historians and museum professionals. Recent speakers in the School of Art Series have been Lisa Freiman (2012), Melanie Herzog (2012), Brooke Anderson (2011), Richard Powell (2010), Monica Blackmun Visonà (2010), Adriana Zavala (2010), James Crump (2009), Andrew Maske (2009), Margaret Vendryes (2009), and Raphaela Platow (2008).
