The Master of Arts in Visual Arts Education is a research and practice based two-year degree program that emphasizes the role of education as a mediator among the visual arts, cultures, and individuals. Addressing the new ecology of visual images that characterize contemporary life, the program has an explicit focus on local and international visual culture issues and their impact on arts teaching and learning. The Master of Arts in Visual Arts Education curriculum springs from broad definitions of visual art, education, arts-based inquiry practices and a broad view of learning contexts, encompassing schools, communities, and museum settings.
The program seeks to prepare mature and sophisticated art educators capable of providing intellectual and practical leadership in the field. The Masters degree is awarded with, or without, P-12 teaching certification. Students pursuing the Master of Arts in Visual Arts Education are those already certified to teach grades P-12, practicing artists and other arts professionals, or students desiring certification who must take an expanded program.
The program is structured to introduce students to past and current issues in the discipline of arts education, while preparing students to conceptualize and undertake independent visual arts research that builds upon, and offers innovations to, existing theories and practices. In addition, the Master of Arts in Visual Arts Education degree is designed around the following goals:
- Advance students’ understandings of the ways in which visual culture is produced by others, yet also problematize students’ roles as producers and consumers of visual culture.
- Build awareness of the overlaps and tensions among various approaches to teaching and learning about, and through, visual culture phenomena.
- Promote the development of artists and educators who are able to visualize, express, and achieve their own education goals while understanding their role in helping others reach their creative potential.
- Facilitate the conditions for creative, innovative research in visual arts education, arts practices, and arts theories and philosophies.
- Promote transdisciplinary studies among the visual arts and other areas of knowledge.
- Build and strengthen engagement within the local and international community through partnerships, internships, and online teaching and learning venues.
- Advance students’ abilities to envision and develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning that will build a strong and vital visual arts education presence in an age of local and global education changes.
As a result of completing the Master of Arts in Visual Arts Education program, our graduates secure teaching positions in the tri-state area, as well as other states, such as New York, Indiana, Colorado, and Oregon. Two of our Master of Arts in Visual Arts Education alumna are teaching art in International schools in Indonesia.
Our graduates are active members of professional arts organizations and take leadership roles in their community. Some of our graduates direct community-based art initiatives, work in museum education programs, and teach in urban and rural settings. They engage in a curriculum design, community arts outreach projects, teacher education, and many graduates maintain scholarly and creative practices. A few selected Master of Visual Arts Education graduates go on to the Ph.D. programs in the field of art education, later becoming university professors.
The Master of Arts in Visual Arts Education program is supported by collaborative links with the Art History and Fine Arts programs, the school of Design, Architecture, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati, and the Niehoff Urban Studio. A partnership with CECH's Teacher Education Division offers our students valuable recruitment initiatives, connections with urban schools, faculty resources, and interdisciplinary exchanges with Teacher Education faculty and students.
