Michael Zaretsky is an Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture and Interior Design in DAAP, a licensed Architect and a LEED Accredited Professional. He is also the director of the Roche Health Center Design Committee. His research is focused around culturally, economically, technologically and environmentally responsive design for communities in need. His research and critique of the 2007 Solar Decathlon which began with a Graduate Seminar in 2008 resulted in He the book Precedents in Zero-Energy Design: Architecture and Passive Design in the 2007 Solar Decathlon (Routledge, 2009). He has recently completely a co-edited volume with Dr. Adrian Parr entitle New Directions in Sustainable Design (Routledge, 2010). He has several published articles and chapters in books and acts as a consultant on Sustainable Design and Appropriate Technologies. His main research since 2008 has been on the design and development of the Roche Health Center for the non-profit Village Life Outreach Project. The project is a zero-energy, low-cost building built of all local materials and techniques that represents a reproducible approach to construction in rural Tanzania. This project has involved two graduate architecture design studios, the research of several faculty and independent study students in SAID and the College of Engineering and a co-op student from the SAID Graduate Architecture program who is working on-site in Tanzania in 2010.
